VMware is a good feature in the workstation that basically lets you share your VM with a machine so that you can access it remotely from any other machine. This is very good because if you have several copies of VMware on different computers, then you have to either clone your VM or you have to store your VM at a central location like the NAS.

However, none of those two options is essentially ideal, especially if you have a high-end machine that you are using to run all your VMs. A clone will double the space and the clone will not be synced. Running VMs on the network is quite slow and not ideal.

By installing a workstation as a server, you can access the same virtual machine from different computers and use the server’s processing power to run VM. In this article, I show you how to setup workstation as a server, share your VM and how to remotely access VMware workstation from another computer.

Enabling of Workstation

By default, you should not really do anything to share the virtual machine because it should be enabled by default. However, in my case, it was disabled for some reason and I had to manually enable it.

To test it, open the workstation and then click on the VM tab that you want to share. Then click VM on the top menu, then manage and then share it. If you see the following message, which means the workstation server service is disabled.

You can click on start, type in services, and then scroll through the VMware workstation server service. In my case, it was set on the manual and it was not running.

Simply double-click on the service and click the Start button to start the service. Also, go ahead and change the startup type to Automatic to ensure that it starts after a reboot.

VM Share

At this point, open VMware Workstation and click on the VM-Manage-Share

On this screen, you have to give a name to your shared virtual machine and you have to choose whether you want to move it to the default shared directory or if you want to clone the whole virtual machine.

Note: Now when you are sharing the virtual machine, you going to gain and even lose some of the features. Even though you gain some remote access you are going to lose the following features they are Unity shared folders,  auto protect, drag and drop, copy and paste, 3D acceleration, thin print and ability to connect your USB device to connect to the host to the virtual machine.

Now click on finish and you will see the process getting the finish and the process should complete fairly quickly. Next, you will find a couple of checkmarks as confirmation.

The name of the server or the IP address or the computer’s hostname can be. The user name and password must be of the local administrator account on the server computer. If you are logged into that computer using your Microsoft account, you can use that login information to connect.

When connecting, you can see a dialog that warns you about the security certificate on the server. This is not usually a security issue (as long as you rely on that computer) and you can click connect anyway. If all work well, you should see the following screen in a new tab.

At the bottom, you should see all the virtual machines that you are currently sharing. In my case, I only shared a Windows 10 virtual machine. Click on it and then click on the green play button to run it. You can also right-click on it to start it. Note that once it’s turned on, you still have to right-click on it and choose Open to view remote VM in a new tab.

Now you can simply use the VM as if it was running locally in your machine. You can find it working better over a local area network where it works well and you won’t experience any lag or delay as well.

By default, the shared directory, where shared VMs are saved, is C: \ Users \ Public \ Documents \ Shared \ Virtual Machines \ and the default server that uses it to connect to remote servers Port is 443. If you want to change any of these settings, you can do this by going to Edit – Preferences and clicking Share VMs.

Note that you should make these changes before sharing any VM because it can only be changed when there is no active shared VM. If you want to change this, you must first stop sharing each VM, which takes it out of the shared VM directory.

If you change the port number when connecting to a client computer, you will need to type in a hostname after a colon and port number.
