For Non-Jailbroken Devices

If you have found a Mac running the modern version of macOS, then you should use some limited use of iOS features shared from your desktop. Linux, Windows, and other operating system users do not need to apply – this is the first party stuff.

You will require to maintain the same Apple ID on both of your Mac and iOS devices. You have to be sure that you sign in to different apps and services (just like your Mac’s Messages app, and System Preferences > iCloud) and you will be able to do the following listed below:

  • Able to send iMessage, media messages, and regular SMS using your Mac’s Messages app.
  • Able to make a call and accept phone calls through your Mac’s Contacts app, both are using cellular and FaceTime.
  • Able to access the Safari browsing session of your mobile device’s using Safari for Mac through the Show Tab Overview button.
  • Able to create and access Reminders, Notes, and Contacts, with the changes pushed on all devices using iCloud.

Handoff was a feature which was added in iOS 8 to making it easy to switch between devices. Make sure that this is turned on under System Preferences > General > Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.

Provided iCloud accounts match up, you can go with the followings:

  • Access the most recent Mobile Safari tab on your Mac.
  • Continue writing the mail draft that you started on your iPhone.
  • Send and retrieve map routes or locations from your devices.
  • Pick where you left incompatible third-party applications such as Pocket and Wunderlist.

From the app switcher, in iOS you can access this feature – just double-tap on the home button and look at the bottom of the screen. On the Mac, a new icon should appear on the very edge of the dock.

You can access many of the features from iCloud.com, features include Notes, Calendar, Mail, Reminders, and any iWork documents synced over iCloud. This is not great, but it is one of the best non-Mac users have got. If you have both PC and Mac, then accessing messaging apps on Windows is also technically possible.

Jailbreakers: Full Remote Control

If your device has already been jailbreaker, then you will be able to control your device completely from the comfort of your computer. Which includes Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, and even other iOS devices.

It is possible thanks for a Cydia tweak which is known as Veency, as the name indicates that it is a VNC server. VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing and it offers a way to share your performance and get rid of control from the third parties. Apple has not kept this functionality in iOS (possibly due to abuse capacity) and you will not find any VNC server on the App Store.

With the help of your jailbroken iOS device in hand, launch Cydia and update it to any repository as needed. Type “Veency” on the search tab and tap on the related result. Hit Install and then Continue. Veency is completely free to install and use.

After completing the installation, just hit on the Restart Springboard and wait for Cydia to do its thing. Now, you will be able to find a Veency entry in your device’s Settings app. You can turn the server on or off, choose to show a cursor and set a password (which is a better idea).

Now, your jailbroken device is ready to be a remote control. Connect both devices to the same local Wi-Fi network, just head to Settings > Wi-Fi on your iOS device and next click on the small “i” to the network which you are using currently. Then you will be able to see a group of numbers, but important is your IP Address.

Now you have to open your chosen VNC viewer. In-built Screen Sharing tool or another remote access tool for Mac can be used by the Mac users. Free RealVNC Viewer is another good option for any operating system, which is available for every major operating system including iOS, Windows, Android, and Linux.

To connect, just point your VNC viewer app to the IP Address of the iOS device that you previously noted. I had a problem connecting without a password, so I recommend getting one and trying again if you have any issues. If everything goes well then you should see the display of your iOS device on the screen.

If you are going to trust this method, then you should know that the IP address of your target device may change from time to time. And the easy way to solve this is to reserve a static IP using the MAC address of your iOS device. Mac address you can find under Settings > General > About, then consult to our guide for the procedures on assigning a static IP.

There are some basic controls in Veency to get access to common iOS functions:

  • Left-click: a regular tap
  • Right-click: home button
  • Middle-click: lock button (workaround needed for Mac)

If you are connecting through the Mac, then you probably will not have a three-button mouse, but you can download MagicPrefs (free) to add your shortcut. If you get any other workaround, tell us in the comments, though this is not a big issue because your iPhone will be closed in due time.

You can type generic using your computer’s keyboard, and you can swipe or tap longer using your trackpad and regular mouse click. Depending on the speed of your network, you can see a slight downturn, but despite some screen tearing and glossy artifact, performance is quite good.

Now that your iPhone can be remotely controlled, at least one local network connection, you can do some good things listed below 🙂

  • Use iMessage, or SMS from Linux, Windows, or even Android!
  • Control what the music is playing without getting up.
  • Access your device anywhere you can get Wi-Fi in your home.
  • Play tricks on your friends or other important …

There are so many limitations. You will not be able to transmit the voice data, so long as you do not pass, Siri will not work. I cannot get the sound to work locally or through the VNC viewer. In detail, calls and video calls do not really work. I cannot find a way to bring the Control Center or the Notification Center, because it is not possible to swipe from the bezels.

Worth it?

It is a novelty to access iOS via Android or send iMessages from your Linux desktop, but is it enough to make the whole process worth it? For Mac users, the answer is probably not.
